About
The aptly named, ‘Made In The Shade’ market (a slang phrase, popular in the 1950s and synonymous with guaranteed success, or a truly swell situation) launched in Glasgow in May 2008. Having received a wonderfully warm welcome from Glasgow’s discerning shoppers and handmade lovers, the event now takes place seasonally at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City.
Bringing the crème of the city’s independent and creative crop together for the first time, the vision of ‘Made In The Shade’ is to showcase young design talent, to encourage customers to relish in the exclusivity of the handmade one-off and to promote the local businesses who are working hard to carve out creative identities amidst a mountain of mass-produced items and high street chains.
Organised by a team of local, independent business owners and creative entrepreneurs, Made In The Shade attracts designers and makers from across Scotland - and beyond. The organisers are committed to promoting neo-craft and are devoted to nurturing Made In The Shade as a DIY, grassroots enterprise. Between them the organisers possess a wealth of expertise. Their talents span numerous craft and design disciplines not to mention various business fields; media, business development, education, music, retail, e-business, marketing and event co-ordination. A number of team members are involved with creative networks such as the Glasgow Craft Mafia and the Creative Entrepreneurs Club.
