The Lighthouse has it made in the shade in 2010
Off-beat shopping event, Made in the Shade makes a welcome return to the galleries of the The Lighthouse building in Glasgow to host a series of four vintage-inspired neo-craft and design showcases this year. The Lighthouse Trust went into administration in August 2009 leaving the Made in the Shade NESTA award winners high and dry; but The Lighthouse, now reinvented as The National Architecture Centre continues to play host to large scale creative events and exhibitions and the vintage-styled showcase makes its comeback next month.
The first of the seasonal boutique shopping events, The Made In The Shade Springtime Jamboree, takes place on Saturday 17th April between 10.30am and 5pm and will showcase the work of over 30 local designer makers and creative businesses in a bid to draw attention to creative enterprise in Scotland and celebrate the DIY approach taken by small businesses and tiny traders in Glasgow. Organised by the owners of all-new handmade gloryhole, The Maisonette in De Courcy's Arcade, business partners Carrie Maclennan and Clare Nicolson are devoted to promoting and nurturing craft and design talent.
“Now more than ever we need to really grab the attention of shoppers and reintroduce them to craft as we see it; updated, relevant and exciting. We must encourage people to engage with and support DIY enterprise. The marketplace is saturated with mass-produced products manufactured overseas for tuppence. The offering on the high street is a much of a much. Why buy a product from a chain store that's designed to look handmade when you can have the real thing? Why buy a highstreet mock up when you can have the original design? Made in the Shade events serve to prove to shoppers that they can own one-of, handmade pieces or highly covetable vintage items – prices range from £1 - £100. Shopping a la Made in the Shade is affordable and accessible. It's fun, it's friendly and it's a special experience. Most importantly, it has a sense of humour”.
Carrie Maclennan (Co-owner, Made in the Shade)
On the day, visitors can expect to be transported to a land of retro rebel housewives in hand-made aprons as they are treated to the sounds of rock'n'roll cool cats, honkytonkers and vintage drag on the decks. As they explore the pick of over thirty stallholders selling products designed and handcrafted with love, customers can take part in the enhanced shopping experience by contributing to public crafting project, The Bunting Bonanza or by spending some time with the Made In The Shade stylist in the Not Now Cato! Vintage Dressing Room. There will even be a DIY vintage-style photo booth set up for visitors to capture a snap of their day out! Very special goody bags containing handmade treats from designer makers, miniature art and other special gifts will be presented to early birds!

Queen of indie business, Lady Luck Rules OK sets up shop in Glasgow!
The Made In The Shade gals are thrilled to announce that Brick Lane based fashion trendsetter, Lady Luck Rules OK (aka Leona Baker) will be setting up shop at this Autumn's edition of the Made In The Shade boutique shopping event at The Lighthouse (Glasgow) on 26th September.
Acclaimed pop art jewellery label, Lady Luck Rules OK started life in 2003 as a stall fixture at London's Portobello Market, intent on staging a backlash against the plethora of middle of the road, mass-produced accessories clogging the high street market. Gosh darn it, the gal succeeded!
Lady Luck Rules OK overthrew the tiresome trend for beaded bracelets and peacock feathers way back then, replacing 'em instead with collections of cheeky, kitsch, acid coloured jewellery pieces reminiscent of mini 3D Warhol sculptures. Leona took rock'n'roll ephemera and icons of pop culture, upcycled them into jewellery charms and THEN reinvented them as wearable style statements. She developed her collections further when she sussed out how to design and make her own original charms from scratch and then launched the LLROK customisable range that we all know and love.
Having featured in a catalogue of high profile fashion supplements (Vogue, Elle, Amelia's Magazine, Nylon - to name a handful), over the years label owner, Leona Baker, has found herself well positioned as a true queen of indie business and the Lady Luck Rules OK empire has flourished. Leona now owns Superette on Brick Lane, an off-beat uber-cool shop come studio space that houses the Lady Luck Rule OK headquarters. Swoon.
"We are so excited that Lady Luck Rules OK will be represented at next season's Made In The Shade event. Leona Baker is an indie idol of ours. I remember seeing her on This Morning years and years ago. She was making bracelets out of lego bricks and necklaces out of plectrums live on tv with Fern Britton. That must have been in 2003. No one was exploring that territory at that time. Leona sparked off a whole new strand of quirky style and helped rework the dowdy reputation of craft and 'making' no end. She's surely a gal after our own hearts and we cannot wait to have her onboard at The Lighthouse in September. We nearly fell over when we got her mail asking if she could include Made In The Shade on her craft tour. So exciting! Leona's stall set-up is never run of the mill so brace yourselves for something very special." Suzanne Smith, Made In The Shade Gal.
